Types of Computer

Computers can be categorized in terms of speed, computing power and size. According to the above criteria the following are the different types of computer.

  • Micro Computer
  • Mini Computer
  • Mainframe Computer
  • Super Computer

Let us discuss different types of computer one by one

Micro Computer

According to dictionary: Micro Computer is – “a small computer that contains a microprocessor as its central processor”

A micro computer is such computer which has been designed for use by one person at a time. Desktop computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and PDA’s (Personal Digital Assistant) are different types of micro computer. Micro computer are cheapest among all other 3 types of computer. It was basically designed for education, entertainment, business, gaming purpose, etc.

Example: Sun Microsystems, Hewlett-Packard, and Dell desktop computers.

Mini Computer

Mini computer are also known as mid range computers and are generally used for small business and firms. Mini computers are more powerful computer than micro computer and can connect approx 200 users simultaneously. A sales department may take help of mini computer to monitor the process of sales.

Example: Apple iPad, Samsung smart phones, tabs, notebooks.

Mainframe Computer

Mainframe computers are more powerful computer than micro and mini computer. Mainframe computers are able to handle thousands of computer simultaneously as well as capable to handle two or more programs simultaneously or concurrently. Mainframe computers are generally used in stock exchange, enterprise resource planning (ERP), for census data, for transaction process, etc.

Example: IBM z Series, System z9 and System z10 servers

Super Computer

Super Computers are the most powerful computer than any other computers. Super computer are fastest computer in the world. It can perform complex calculations in fractions of seconds. The performance of super computer is measured in Floating-Point Operations Per Second (FLOPS) instead of Millions of Instructions Per Second (MIPS). Super computers are generally used in weather fore-casting, scientific calculation, flight control, etc.

Example: Belle, Deep Blue, and Hydra are super computers
