Different components of a computer system or block diagram of a computer system
The following are the different components of a computer system. They are:
- Input Unit
- Memory Unit
- Processing Unit
- Control Unit
- Output Unit
1 . Input Unit
Input unit is responsible for supplying raw facts and figures know as data from outer world as input to the computer so that processed data can be given in the form of output. Input unit takes raw data from us to computer in an organized manner for processing. With the help of keyboard and mouse we use to provide data and instructions to the computer.
2. Memory Unit
Memory unit is responsible for storing data and instructions so that they can be made available when processing starts. The main task of memory unit is to store data and instructions before and after processing. Two types of memory used in memory unit are: i.) Primary memory (volatile in nature) and ii.) Secondary memory (non-volatile in nature) to store data and instructions. The data is stored in RAM(primary memory) first and then after execution it is stored in Hard-disk(secondary memory) if needed for further processing or use.
3. Processing Unit
Central Processing Unit (CPU) is responsible for processing of data and instructions in the computer. Processing of data and instructions are carried out with the help of i.) Arithemetic Unit and ii.) Logic Unit . CPU is called as the brain of the computer. Arithmetic Unit is responsible to perform arithmetic operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Logic Unit is responsible for performing logical operations such as comparing, searching, sorting, merging, etc.
4. Control Unit
Control Unit is responsible for controlling all the activities done by different components of the computer without doing the actual processing of the data. It is responsible to transfer control over different units of the computer system. It is so smart that it knows when to take input from input device, where to store them and when to put the data to the output device after processing. Therefore, the main responsibility of control unit is to manage and coordinate all different units of a computer system.
5. Output Unit
The output unit is such medium through which user gets the desired result in the form of output such as visual display (file) or printed report. The output unit is also responsible to convert machine level instructions to high level instructions and with the help of output device makes the result available to end users.
